Karla’s Story:

I struggled with my weight and cravings from as early as grade 9 in school.

I longed to be skinnier, so I could be accepted by others. I also struggled with stuttering from my toddler years. With my stuttering already in place, my weight issues didn't help me to feel confident with myself. I wanted to fit in with others so badly! I thought that would give me the confidence I needed. However the more I tried, the further I got away from reaching full inward acceptance and the self-esteem I so longed for. In fact, It wasn't until I went down that trail of drugs, alcohol, and sex that I finally said enough. There must be a better way. I began taking my health more seriously.

First, I got rid of the addictions. It stopped fairly quickly - smoking, drugs, alcohol - which made a huge impact on my health. Not only did I have to deal with my heart, but also had to tackle how I viewed myself head on!

That’s when the next addiction started....Yep it was with food. I thought that if I could hide the pain well, then I would be good. I had no idea how this would keep me down while I was trying so hard to get up. It wasn't long until I decided that this wasn't working.

By this time, I had met my future husband, and he wasn't into drinking, smoking, drugs, the bar scene. Plus, he was a good cook. It was like I won the lottery! He didn't just make something, he made healthy food. This helped me to feed my body and my brain with healthy whole foods. Once I started regaining a consistent habit of eating right, I decided that the next step would be to incorporate an exercise program to help build further healthy habits. It wasn't easy to be consistent, but it was worth it. I gained the confidence to feel better about myself and how I saw myself. I haven't reached my goal, but I am at least not where I used to be.

These two small habits ignited a passion that drew me into how I could help others.

I wanted to show people that there is a better way to live! I know help others learn how to be healthy, not only physically, but also mentally, socially, and spiritually. I still stutter, I still have those lazy days where I don't exercise. I still have cravings.

What is different now is that each day is a new day and I get to start each day new.

I don’t beat myself up from messing up or forgetting to do something anymore. I just look forward each day and know that each day is a new day.
